When assessing HVAC machinery and indoor environments, measuring temperature at various points can tell you whether equipment is operating effectively.

Yet, some of the instruments at your disposal may not be ideal. While one may use analogue thermometers, another may be too delicate to use. In recognition of these problems, Testo Australia has released three Smart Probes designed for the modern HVAC mechanic.

The testo 115i is a clamp thermometer that can attach to pipes and hoses.

Equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, each of these Smart Probes can send data to users' smartphones via the Smart Probe App. This enables technicians to view, organise and store data through iOS or Android phones. Let's take a closer look.

1. The testo 115i

Hose and pipe temperatures alert HVAC mechanics to potential problems, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding the units which they service. The testo 115i is a clamp thermometer that can attach to pipes, hoses and other components that may carry refrigerant, gas or other substances.

Capable of picking up temperatures of between -50 to 150 degrees Celsius, the testo 115i has a battery life of 250 hours. Small, lightweight and accurate, technicians can transfer data from the clamps to the App to calculate all refrigeration parameters.

2. The testo 805i

HVAC systems are incredibly complex, consisting of multiple ducts and vents leading through walls and ceilings. Often, mechanics have to test temperatures at walls and the surfaces of air conditioning components, and the testo 805i enables them to do so.

Sporting a wide range of -30 to 250 degrees Celsius, this IR thermometer enables owners to assess fuses and circuit breakers as well as surface temperatures. One of the stand-out features is the diffractive optic laser marker, allowing users to choose an exact point at which to take temperature readings.

Analogue thermometers don't provide the data HVAC technicians need. Analogue thermometers don't provide the data HVAC technicians need.

3. The testo 905i

A helpful companion to the testo 805i, the 905i comes with a metal probe that extends from the body of the device. The instrument enables technicians to:

  • Read measurement data on tablets and smartphones;
  • Log data into graphs or tables and;
  • Send measured value reports as .PDF or Excel files.

The main purpose of this device was to make it easy for HVAC mechanics to check ambient air temperatures in ducts, registers and open environments. With a range of -50 to 150 degrees Celsius, it's a simple instrument that can provide a lot of valuable information.
