A new high-tech thermal imaging camera is being used to fight wildfires and save lives in San Diego, California.

The thermographic camera used by the San Diego County to detect fires and hotspots. It was special in that, similar to testo products, it had the ability to display crisp images even through thick smoke, making it ideal for fire fighting applications.

Speaking to San Diego’s ABC 10 News, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts explained that the improved accuracy and clarity of the Flir camera allowed teams to zero in on hot spots and act more quickly during time-sensitive situations.

“You can put your crews on the actual fire instead of spraying all over. I compare it to using a shotgun. We can use a rifle,” he said.

Stories such as this highlight the ever-increasing sophistication and accuracy of thermographic equipment – and it’s not just firefighters who can put these tools to good use.

Today, workers in a wide variety of industries – from healthcare to construction and maintenance – utilise thermal imaging cameras in order to work with improved speed and efficiency.

For tradespeople, thermal imaging cameras can be used to detect hotspots and cold bridges, identify potential leakages and visualise overheated connections far more quickly than ever before.

If you’re looking for a new thermal imaging camera to improve your performance on the job, you might consider any one of the following great models from Testo:

  • 870-1 Affordable Thermal Imager – This affordable yet reliable thermal imager is ideal for a range of practical applications. It features a large 3.5 inch display and resolution of 160 x 120 pixels.
  • 875-1i Versatile Thermal Imager – The 875-1i is a slightly more expensive general purpose thermal imaging camera. However, its extra versatility and improved thermal sensitivity make it well worth the investment.
  • 876 Camcorder Style Thermal Imager – If you’re looking for a camcorder style thermal imager – as opposed to the typical handgrip style of the 870-1 or the 875-1i – then the 876 is a great option. With a large rotatable display, this camera is great for getting into tight and awkward spaces.
