Mobile devices: The new way to measure IAQ

Much of our lives is spent indoors, meaning the buildings in which we work and reside have a huge impact on our health.

According to the Western Australia Department of Commerce, poor indoor air quality (IAQ) may cause sick building syndrome (SBS). Those suffering from SBS could experience headaches, irritated throats, dry coughs, itchy skin and even fatigue.

This concern prompts organisations throughout the country to hire HVAC R mechanics to test IAQ using a variety of instruments. Instead of using expensive analogue devices, these professionals have the option to use their smartphones and tablets to measure IAQ, provided they have Testo’s Smart Probes.

Supporting mobility 

The next generation of HVAC R technicians are privy to mobile devices, but rarely have they had the opportunity to use them for work-related purposes. The Smart Tools enable them to do so.

Each of the eight Smart Tools are equipped with Bluetooth, allowing them to send measurement data directly to technicians’ mobile devices. Mechanics can manage this data through the Smart Probe App, available on Android and iOS devices.

The Smart Probe App is the central point of information, enabling personnel to:

• Simultaneously analyse measurement data from up to six Smart Tools;
• Send measured value reports as PDFs or Excel files via email; and
• Maintain connections with Smart Tools at distances less than 20 metres.

Which Smart Tools measure IAQ? 

In order to determine a building’s IAQ, mechanics need to measure multiple factors: temperature, airflow, humidity and contaminants. Given this requirement, many of the Smart Tools can assist HVAC R mechanics in calculating IAQ.

The testo 410i, a pocket-sized vane anemometer, enables technicians to check volume flow, velocity and temperature at supply registers. This provides professionals with the context needed to determine whether the air in an office, classroom or other facility is providing a comfortable environment for inhabitants.

Another element HVAC R mechanics must take into account is relative humidity. To assess this factor, the testo 605i can accommodate. A small, durable thermohygrometer with 250 hours of battery life, the device checks air temperature and relatively humidity. In addition, the instrument is able to measure enthalpy at air handlers to determine BTU.
