For HVAC technicians and operators, mould can be a real nuisance. After all, it's not like many of the other issues you'll experience on a day-to-day; mould can appear anywhere, at any time.

Due to the prevalence of mould growing in areas we find difficult to work on, Testo has developed a method of testing to reduce the time spent evaluating mould. By combining two excellent products – the testo 605i and 805i – together with the Smart Probes App, an individual can easily detect the level of mould based on the app's traffic light warning system:

  • Green – all clear and no mould detected on the surface.
  • Yellow – mould detected and potentially building up.
  • Red – there is mould detected on the surface.

Let's take a look at what both of these products offer individually, and how they can be combined for an optimised HVAC experience.

The testo 605i and 805i

Designed to accurately measure relative humidity and temperature in a room, duct or environmental chamber, the testo 605i is a Smart Probe thermo-hygrometer that automatically calculates dew point and wet bulb temperature.

With a temperature range of -4 to 140 °F and a relative humidity range of 0 to 100 per cent, the 605i is an essential part of any HVAC technician's toolbox.

Following the traffic light system, HVAC technicians can automatically detect mould on a surface.

The testo 805i, on the other hand, is an infrared thermometer that indicates the measurement area with a laser pattern, then captures data from the marker and transmits this to the testo Smart Probes App on your smart device.

Providing a measuring range of -22 to 482 °F, the testo 805i operates on a 30 hour battery life, ensuring you'll have all the time needed to take vital measurements.

Now with their powers combined

While these two instruments are inarguably valuable in their own right, when combined together with the powerful Smart Probes App they open a new world of technology entirely.

As seen in the video above, mould indication is carried out easily with the Smart Probes app, starting by pressing the instrument button that displays the surface temperature, the ambient temperature and humidity and resultant surface humidity.

By following the traffic light system, HVAC technicians can automatically detect mould on a surface – taking a photo if needed via the smart device's camera which can then be uploaded or sent for further examination off-site.
