Israeli shipping company ZIM has announced a new and innovative tracking system which will allow the schematics of any sensitive cargo to be constantly monitored.

Of special interest to those needing to ship anything which must have its temperature kept in check, any imbalances can be viewed in real time and ultimately be corrected more quickly, lessening the chance of the cargo spoiling.

Announced at the 14th Annual Cool Chain and Controlled Temperature Logistics Europe expo in Frankfurt, the system will soon be made available to industry.

Artificial environment

One sector in particular will benefit from having more control over the artificial environments created inside the containers.

“ZIMonitor is particularly suited for the Pharma industry, designed to provide [an] ongoing data flow, alerts and automatic reports, along with a 24/7 professional response along the cargo route to prevent damages,” the freight company explained in a January 26 news release.

Of course, the pharmaceutical industry will welcome any new freight links which allow for cargo to be transported more easily.

However, while there’s little denying that the system is incredibly suitable for moving sensitive medicines around the globe, there are a number of other sectors which can benefit from carefully temperature controlled shipping environments.

ZIM claim that the latest system will also be perfectly suited to transport the following:

  • Delicate aviation parts
  • Perishable foodstuffs
  • Wines and other alcoholic beverages
  • Seeds for agriculture
  • Sensitive electronic components
  • Art works and antiques

The new method of shipping has been designed with Good Distribution Practices (GDP) in mind, meeting the strict compliancy rules outlined by the European Union.

Widespread industrial use

Subsequently, an international pilot scheme which was run in partnership with a pharmaceutical company proved to be a success, with ZIM confident that its latest offering is now ready for more widespread industrial use.

Controlled environments can be absolutely critical in freight, whether by land, air or sea. Using a data logger to ensure that both temperature and humidity readings are kept in check is a must for a host of industries.

The testo 184 H1 is perfect for anyone needing to keep track of those two metrics throughout the shipping process of any sensitive products.

The frequency of any measurements can be adjusted to as many as one every minute or as few as one every 24 hours. Twin that feature with a 500 day battery life and you have a unit that is more than capable of accurate measurements regardless of transit length.
